Four-cornered Table Mat Of 1913

THE table mat here illustrated is crocheted with No 12 German knitting cotton and a coarse steel crochet hook. While thick enough for ordinary purposes the mat may be made doubly useful by being lined with linen or muslin between which and the crochet a layer of fleece (in 1913 asbestos was used) into mat should be slipped for sturdiness.

For the four cornered mat chain four and join in ring, and in the ring work fourteen short double-crochet. Join.
Second Round
Chain four, then make two short double crochet in each stitch of preceding round, with two chain after every seventh stitch of the round, and after the last stitch catch in the second stitch of the starting chain. The four holes start the four corners.
Third Round
Chain four, make one short crochet in the hole, make a puff in the next stitch instructed for the round mat one short double crochet in the next, and alternate in this manner to the next hole. In it work one short double crochet, chain two, one short double crochet in the hole. Work in puffs and short double crochet in this manner all around, working each corner like the first corner, and to complete the corner with which the round was begun, making a short double crochet in the joining stitch of preceding round. Join to the second stitch of the chain with which the round was started.
Fourth Round
Chain four to start the round, and work one short double crochet in each short double crochet, and one behind each puff. In each corner work one short double crochet, two chain, one short double crochet. Make a short double crochet over the joining stitch of preceding round, and catch in the second stitch of the chain with which this round was begun. of the chain with which this round was begun Alternate the third and fourth rounds until the mat measures about ten inches across, ending with a puff round. Then work the border rounds as follows;
First Round
Put one short double crochet in each stitch. In each corner work two short double crochet, chain two, two short double crochet.
Second Round
One short double crochet in each stitch; in each corner one short double crochet, two chain, one short double crochet, two chain, one short double crochet, two chain one short double crochet.

Third Round
One short double crochet in each stitch along the sides. For the corner chain two, one short double crochet in first space, chain two one, short double crochet in next space, chain two one short double crochet in same space, chain two one short double crochet in next space. chain two.
Fourth Round
Work in hole,s putting one short double crochet in every second stitch, two chain between. At the corners work one short double crochet in each space excepting the center, in which work two.
Fifth Round
Three single crochet in each space along the sides, and six single crochet in the center space at the corners.
