CROCHET PATTERN OF THE OVAL TABLE MAT OF 1913

CROCHET PATTERN OF THE OVAL TABLE MAT OF 1913Designed by Helen Marvin

THE table mat here illustrated is crocheted with No 12 German knitting cotton and a coarse steel crochet hook. While thick enough for ordinary purposes the mat may be made doubly useful by being lined with linen or muslin between which and the crochet a layer of fleece (in 1913 asbestos was used) into mat should be slipped for sturdiness.

For this Oval Table Mat Of 1913,rustic style of WW1 , proceed as follows:
For the oval mat of the puff begin with a chain of forty two stitches, skip two chain, one short double crochet in each of the others, and four extra short double crochet in the end. Turn, skip the chain in which the four stitches have just been made, and in each of the others work one short double crochet, with three extra stitches in the end.
Second Round
Chain two, short double crochet in each of preceding round, excepting the five stitches at each end, in each of which put which put two short double crochet. All the stitches throughout the work are picked up on the double thread.
Third Round
One short double crochet in each stitch along the sides. Around the increasings at the end make one short double crochet each stitch, two chain between. There will be nine holes around each end. Repeat the third round three times, on each round making the chain stitches more loosely, to give the proper sweep to the curved ends.On every other round there will be eight, not nine holes.
Seventh Round
Work one short double crochet and one puff round (see round mat directions) alternately down each side, and around the eight holes at each end work as follows:
Make one short double crochet in the first hole, two in the next one, one in the next, two short double crochet in each of the next two holes. After each short double crochet excepting, the last make two chain stitches.
Eighth Round
Put one short crochet in each short double crochet, and one in each puff along the sides. At ends put two short double crochet between the two made in the same hole of preceding round, and one short double crochet in each of the other holes. Make two chain after each short double crochet excepting the last. Each end is increased four times, and an extra short double crochet is added at each end of each side.
Ninth Round
Work in puffs and  short double crochet along the sides, and at the ends make holes as before, increasing four times at each end. Each side will have one puff more than the preceding puff round.
Repeat the eighth and ninth alternately, until thirteen rounds are made, then work three rounds  more with no puffs at the sides.
Seventeenth Round
Work the ends as usual, and along the sides make one short double crochet in every second stitch, one chain between.
Eighteenth Round
Two single crochet in each space all around. Join and fasten off.
